Trotting out Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani has an editorial in today's NYTimes(free, because it's Giuliani, right?) criticizing the Senate for failing to sign on to Bush's wishlist in extending all provisions of the Patriot Act. Cookie Christine also has a Giuliani sighting on Fox news defending Bush on the unconstitutional NSA spying case.

In eight paragraphs, he mentions 9-11 six times by name. He also has this falsehood, "after six weeks of intense scrutiny and debate, Congress passed the Patriot Act." Don't you remember that the final draft was given to the Congress less than 24 hours before they were to vote on it, and there were numerous admissions that Congressmen had voted on it without even completely reading it?

But that's not my point.

After years out of the public eye, making money for his consulting firm based solely on the fact that he didn't run away screaming on Sept. 11, he is once again being trotted out to remind us of that day.

We should pass the Patriot Act because only he really remembers how horrible 9-11 was. We should allow the president to violate the law because only Rudy remembers how horrible 9-11 was. We should unquestioningly allow the President to do anything he wants because only Rudy remembers how horrible 9-11 was.

Think I'm exaggerating? Rudy's closing paragraph is four words.

"How quickly we forget."

Shame on you.

  • I blame Time Magazine. If they'd named Osama bin Laden Man of the Year in 2001 (a title that's historically gone to the biggest newsmaker of the year, good or bad), then Giuliani wouldn't have gotten such a big head over the one really good thing he managed to do that year.

  • If he tries running on 9/11 he's fucked. That number has been milked to death already by Bush. People are sick of hearing it every time they turn on their TV or open their newspaper. I see Oliver Stone is doing a movie on it now, which should provide the final kiss of death. It's longer ago now than it took to fight the whole damn second world war.

  • Giuliani is pro life so no matter what the polls say, I don't think he'll make it through the republican primaries unless there's just nobody else.

  • the coverage in the uk about him changed overnight (like so many other things) after 9/11.

one minute he was a right-wing bigot and the next minute he was being lionised.

incidentally, you seem to keep up with these things and they seem to be lionising the david cameron guy. new leader of the tories. basically, the media want him after blair, and yes, he is an arsehole

  • That's interesting, Michael. The media's sick of Labor? I don't keep too close an eye on British politics, but I usually watch the elections and when our countries' policy's intersect. So, alot over the last few years.

We actually got your election coverage here last time around, and it was great.

  • basically, just like the US, the same person is 'required' to be leader all the time. corporate friendly 'but with a heart'. same shit. all it depends on is who can be best PORTRAYED as doing the right thing. it does not matter if htey ar. the leanest reading of history will tell anyone this is so. stop relying on politicians..and the media are just their puppets.
