How do they look in the mirror?

How can you call this foreign aid money when it is being spent explicitly to affect the outcome of an election? ($2,000,000)

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The Bush administration is spending foreign aid money to increase the popularity of the Palestinian Authority on the eve of crucial elections in which the governing party faces a serious challenge from the radical Islamic group Hamas.

Spreading democracy, my ass.

  • It's a frickin' payoff, and the irony is that Hamas is just doing what Fatah started doing 30 years ago in a process that culminated with Fatah morphing into the Palestinian Authority.

Radicals become the establishment despite the meddling of superpowers.

  • That's a good point too, Kvatch. I'm not really an expert on the politics of Palestine, but the two heads of Hamas always confuses me. They act as both a fighting force, and alos run free schools and health care for the poor. I just can't get a feel for it.

It is cyclical, like you say, the revolutionaries take over, amass power, and become the fat plutocrats that they were fighting against in the first place.

    Power corrupts, I guess.
