"Addicted to Oil"

Did anyone else notice that Bush stuttered slightly when uttering the "addicted to oil" line? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, so I thought I'd ask.

Did anybody else see hesitation in that line? Almost as if he regretted it before he said it? As if it was difficult to deliver?

Just curious.

  • YES!!! I think he WAS uncomfortable with the connotations of the word. I think you're right, I was suprised that such a word was used, myself, because we on the left call it addiction, which is exactly what suburbaconsumaculture is... it was a very suprising choice. He could have used the standard: we need to become less oil dependent for our national security, so we are not beholden to other nations, etc. While still an admission, its a but more America-thumping.

  • I noticed it too! Actually there were several times when he was spouting an obvious lie that his eyes seemed to dart back and forth as if to say "are they buying this crap?"

I can't see Bush winning any poker games in the near future!

  • Funny you should post this, Mike. Just yesterday I published a tongue-in-cheek parody of the 'oil addiction' foolishness on our local message/blog [below].

I stacked the post with many fallacious debate tactics and led the audience into believing I was serious. The only serious part of my post was pointing out how foolish Bush's comments were.

The sad part of this is that no one, not one person has so far challenged me on my fabricated story and my fallacious arguments. Seemingly, they nodded through my 'story' then commented about their cars and the mileage they get.

Whoa! Ignorance is rampant in my neck of the woods, but they already proved that in the last election for mayor and city council.

  • Yeah, I just thought it was strange that he had that little stutter on the "to." And, I keep hearing it on all the radio and tv coverage so it keeps coming back.

And there were several other moments where I wrote down tics in my notes. The most interesting one, looking back at the notes, was this strange hyper blinking and mouth movements after the "never surrender to evil" line.

And, Lib Dem, I tried a few satire pieces early on, but my writing style isn't suited for it. I got the same kind of tepid response. If you give me Hackett instead of DeWine, all Ohio crap is forgiven.
