Picture of the Day - 2

  • Yeah, I thought this one bordered pretty close to exploitation, but at the same time I thought it visually captured the difficulties faced by all the soldiers' children in a very real emotional way.

I often debate these pictures in my head as to whether I think they're a "fair" representation of something larger. I could just run Abu Ghraib photos and bloody carcass photos and get a simple emotional reaction, but I really don't think that's fair.

There are millions of Americans who experience Iraq in very different ways, from the soldiers to the families, to the Iraqis themselves. Especially on Iraq, I try to post pictures that capture different elements of that.

I'm a little obsessive about the pictures, I only put up about one in ten that make it into the maybe pile. I really try to be tasteful yet still convey this complicated message.

    Thanks for the compliment.

    Mike
