Katrina video

One of the bloggers at First Draft went down to New Orleans for the last week or so, and put a short video up over at their site of driving around the 9th Ward. Although I'm not crazy about the music, it gives incredible depth to the scope of the damage.

As horrible as the images were that we saw out of that disaster, this captures the true breadth of the tragedy. And remember, this was filmed just last week.

This is just phenomenal blogging. Amidst all my little agogs and snarks and "look at this" posts .... This is what blogs can offer. I really can't praise it enough. Take a look.

  • As a native Gulf Coast Texan, I am accustomed to hurricanes and their awesome damage, but Katrina was the worst. It is a national disgrace that warnings of New Orleans' vulnerability were not heeded and the shortcomings addressed. Then the fiasco of federal and state response was a national disgrace. Now the rebuilding of the city and the handling of displaced refugees is yet another disgrace.

    Shame, shame, shame.

  • Yeah, I'm the same, a native Houston resident, and in my mind, I keep comparing it to Galveston 1900, although in a lot of ways it was much worse.

Part of it was the "slow moving disaster" part of it that was largely preventable if the government had done something(anything!) in the first several days.

You're right, it is completely shameful. The cynical side of me wonders how different the response would have been if it had happened in election year 2004.

And batten down, with this "no winter" we've had, the gulf waters are going to be warm this year.
