Picture of the Day - 2

An Iraqi boy in his living room after a US Army raid.

(This is the different type of image I was talking about when Iraqi photographers are working for the wires rather than Western photographers. A western photog would've just travelled on with the troops he was embedded with.

An Iraqi photog wants to show the Iraqi experience. Different images, different impact.)

  • It's depressing when you see the shots of the Iraqi home raids. I feel bad for our soldiers, because they've got to know the images look like still-shots out films about life under the Nazis. Can you imagine being five years old and experiencing a military raid? Hearts and minds. Uh-huh.

  • Yeah, bill. It's just another trauma that might come out later.

  • We are making generations of iraqis that will forever hate us, and teach their children to hate us.

  • Exactly. And the weird thing is that we don't appreciate all of the minor ways we're doing this. Americans know that Abu Ghraib makes arabs hate us, but they don't seem to understand embarassing men in front of their wives and mothers will also generate later hate.

How many pictures have I seen of innocent Iraqi men pinned to the ground while their house is searched, crying women and children in the bnackground?
