Two articles on Global Warming

The Independent

Scientists are now convinced that Arctic sea ice is showing signs of both a winter and a summer decline that could indicate a major acceleration in its long-term rate of disappearance. The greatest fear is that an environmental "positive feedback" has kicked in, where global warming melts ice which in itself causes the seas to warm still further as more sunlight is absorbed by a dark ocean rather than being reflected by white ice.

GENEVA - Greenhouse gases blamed for global warming and climate change have reached their highest ever levels in the atmosphere, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Tuesday.

  • Didn't you read sci fi? The bunker/escape ships are only for the "elite."

  • George Carlin says humanity is completed fucked and needs to go the way of the dinosaurs.

He says he hopes that part of the asteroid that knocked the dinosaurs off comes back for us and he hopes it comes through the hole in the ozone layer for a little bit of irony.

He also says he hopes the death throes start on the other side of the earth, not because he hopes to survive the asteroid armageddon, but because he wants to hear the shrill, hysterical coverage on the cable networks.

I'm kinda with Carlin on this. If the world is going to end, I want it to end slowly just so I can hear Tweety Bird say things like "How do Democrats expect to win when all they do is sound defeatist on issues like global warming?"

    Yeah, that would be fun.

  • Did anyone catch the "60 Minutes" story on the melting of the polar ice cap a few weeks ago? As the reporter is wrapping up one sequence on the ice, a gigantic block of ice BREAKS OFF right behind him, as if on cue.

    Still any skeptics out there?

  • reality based.

The matthews quote is great. I laughed out loud.

And no, Dave, I didn't see it, but that's happening all over the place. Countdown had some place(I don't remember where) that it has become a tourist site to watch the ice crumbling.

The real thing to me is the multitude of feedback loops that have been theorized beyond the arctic surface changes. There's the tundra melt in Siberia that may release the equivalent of several years worth of human carbon production, the changes in the oceans release processes.

We may already be past the fallover point.

  • Hey Mike:

Just thought I'd pop in and say hello. The blog has been great the last couple of weeks...keep it up.

    How are you?

By Blogger Marisa, at 8:54 PM

  • Hey, Marisa. Thanks for the compliment.

    I'm Ok. Nothing big really.

Your email went on the to do stack as I warned you they would from time to time.

Unfortunately there's been alot to blog lately.

Ideally, we'd be in a situaton where everything was going swimmingly, and I'd be occasionally writing about elements of tax policy, but that's not the government we have right now.

    Oh, how I miss it.

  • Lol, well, what would we bloggers do with ourselves if there was nothing to write about but tax policy.

Not to worry about the email, I've been busy as well.
