A whiff of desperation from Rumsfeld
Rumsfeld is circulating talking points on why he shouldn't be fired.
If you read the article, the purpose of the "memorandum" is abundantly clear. Packed with tight, convenient, repeatable details(aka talking points,) the memorandum is intended to help fight the impression that Rumsfeld is "micromanaging."
So, in order to prove he is not "micromanaging," Rumsfeld sent out a memo telling his generals exactly what to say. I find the irony overwhelming.
AND, of course, there at the bottom, defending the administration as always, is my state's shame, Senator John Cornyn.

The thing is this--even if they fire him, won't they just look for someone just as bad, or if at all possible, worse?

Maybe they'll give the job to Chertoff! Or Harriet Miers! or Elizabeth Cheney (who's apparently an assistant secretary of state - as Mel Allen used to say, "How about that!)
And when it's all said and done, isn't the policy coming from Cheney's office anyway?

NYC, that's my big question. I'm hoping that if they are forced to let him go that the political momentum against the administration will force a consensus choice. Of course, it would take a special type of individual because that person would be operating outside Bush's "loyalty loop."
And, reality based, you've hit the problem. I don't have an answer, we certainly could get someone worse, but I can hope, eh?
