WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush will promote a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage on Monday, the eve of a scheduled Senate vote on the cause that is dear to his conservative backers.

  • Don't forget the flag-burning bill the GOP is also going to bring up for a vote too. Howard Fineman said on Olbermann last night that the GOP is getting diminishing returns on these issues and I certainly hope that would be the case. Even the most nuttiest of wingers has to see that they're being "played" on these issues by Rove/Bush, right? Geez, I hope that's true, any case.

  • I saw that, too. Again, anecdotal, but the "rational" Bush base people I know are going to see all this and get angrier that Bush isn't working to fix deficits. That's a big deal down here. They are against gay marriage, but the priority deck has reshuffled. Immigration is a bigger deal than gay marriage, Iraq is a bigger deal than gay marriage, and he's largely on the wrong side of these for his base.

  • I know, this "wedge issue" just kills me because of the discrimination. Of course, that, I guess, is what gives it it's power in that it allows those who support it to validate their bigotry by claiming it's a political issue.

    And, from what I've read, it's not even supposed to make it out of the Senate.

    It's just an opportunity for a small number of Republican Senators to make speeches on the subject.

    I do think it's telling that we've gone from the ERA to this.

  • Isn't there also supposed to be a little something in there about the separation of church and state? Oh, I get it. God told him that was all wrong, right?

  • Oh, Rachie, it's not about god. It's about the SANCTITY of marriage. Just because it has a religious word doesn't mean it favors one religion. Just like the National day of Prayer, or the Faith Based initiatives that as of the 2004 election had not given a dime to any non christian group.
