From the Doonesbury/Gary Trudeau page:

"Marriage is under vicious attack now, I think from the forces of hell itself."

  • True.

I haven't actually read the proposed amendment because it's not going to pass, but in order to accomplish what they claim it will, it would have to write an exception to the full faith and credit clause of the constitution which could be a big deal as well.

I'm assuming that it is a specific exception because I haven't read anywhere of other further exceptions or a broadening of this breach.

And, I'm beginning to think this wave of theocracy has crested. It will certainly not be the last, but the fact that they're trying this measure that will not pass rather than something more moderate that will tells me that their power is on the wane.

  • The longer a theocracy exists, the more specific its fault-finding becomes, and the more people realize they are part of the "them" not the "us" of the theocrats.

This is what happend -- to some degree -- with the Taliban (and we were seeing this with the clerics in Iran as well, until we invaded Iraq and drove the Iranians toward defensive nationalism). The only problem is, our own actions are increasingly seen as being even more objectionable than the old Taliban regime...

  • It's funny. I wrote the Fundamentalism post above before I read this comment, but you hit on two of the big points.

  • I agree with Mr. Dobson. He and his forces of hell are attacking what should be the expansion of marriage to equally encompase all people committed to a fulfilling monogamous relations with another individual.

  • I think that's waht kills me about all this is that it is such a trumped up issue. I mean whether or not the gay couple is married, they're still going to be at the PTA meetings, ya know?
