So, What's going on with Rove?

I don't know. Another "scheduled" grand jury meeting came and went today with no apparent action.

It could be the holiday weekend put things on hold. It could be that Rove accepted the plea deal that was put on the table. It could be that some new bit of information complicated the case(Luskin's specialty.) It could be that someone else accepted a plea deal and so the new statements and evidence are being integrated. It could be alot of things.

The one thing I don't think it is, is that Rove has been let off the hook in some way, because if this were the case, I do not believe that the defense team or White House supporters would remain quiet about this. They would be trumpeting Rove's vindication and the end of the "political prosecution" to the high heavens.

The one curious element over the last week is the remarkable lack of statements, actions, or leaks from the Rove camp. The last frantic flurry was a week ago when the Rove team pushed the Armitage story as a trial ballon, then attempted to throw Novak under the bus. Over the last month, they've been spinning at least a story a week, but nothing this week.

So, I would gather that either the Rove team is completely in the dark and waiting like the rest of us, believe they've done enough to escape(I don't see how,) or Rove is indeed cooperating and was told to shut the hell up.

I just find the sudden, complete silence very odd. As soon as I see anything, I'll let you know.

Libby Update. Judge Walton ruled on alot of the discovery issues. (Ruling.) To me, it reads as greatly narrowing the scope to solely the perjury charges(which it should be.) This ruling is important because in aloowing access to summaries, the judge is getting rid of alot of the classification issues the Libby defense was hoping to use to greymail the case away.

  • Guess I didn't miss the fireworks after all! I thought my 3 weeks away from politics would be more than enough time for it all to come down.

Maybe it will come by the Fitz of July!

  • I did, too. The only thing I can say is that I remember something very similar in the weeks before the Libby indictment. There was tons of furor and speculationeach week, and nothing happened. The eventual indictment was forced by the termination of the special grand jury. (Libby was indicted on their last day.)

With no forced ending, there's no telling how long this might drag out.

  • It is odd that Rove's side stopped spinning B.S. this week. It could be that Rove agreed to cooperate. But if Rove did make a deal w/ Fitz, how does he continue to work in the WH while dishing dirt on (presumably) the VP? While we're all in the dark about the deal it's okay, I suppose, but eventually the Rove deal would be revealed and that would certainly be an interesting day at the gaggle and/or on Hardball as the administration tried to spin keeping Rove around after he had pled and was cooperating against the VP.

Mike, I get the feeling that Rove's side is as much in the dark as we are with where Fitz is heading, which is why we're getting silence from them. Plus the activity at the current gj seems pretty minimal. But I bet the B.S. starts getting spun again as the activity at the gj ratchets up (whenever that is.)

  • Fitz for prez i say. A no BS, unleakable administration would be a real wonder.

  • I kinda get the impression that they are lost as well. At least as of a week ago when they were spinning off in all directions.

I'll bet your holiday weekend observation a week ago was right and that it'll start up next week. Everybody's taking a week before the Sh*t starts up again.

And, I don't see how Rove could stay in the Whitehouse if he's cooperating. There was that weird trial balloon in the Armitage story I linked, but I don't think that was anything.

And, it's not only the functionality of Rove ratting people out while working there, it's also the politics. No matter what they name it, if there's an official agreement that involves cooperation, the political fallout would be the same.

And I guess it has to do with why your interested as to whether a Rove deal is good or bad. If there is one, it would certainly suggest that Fitzgerald is not done, and Rove is just another step to someone higher or far guiltier.

I just don't know. I hadn't seen the Rove case anywhere, so I thought I'd throw up an open ended post.

  • Without a doubt, something is brewing.

I think Jr. has had it with Cheney and when Fitz had the goods on Rove Jr. and Rove decided to make lemonade. Jr. has successsion on his mind. Rove probably is enthusiastic about it.

  • There may be something to that.

(Pure Speculation.) If Rove was offered a plea deal, not reported concretely anywhere and denied by Luskin, but "negotiations" have been reported at several points, Rove would either be giving up someone up the chain, or someone much more guilty. So, either Cheney, or somebody else who did something really awful like try to destroy the 250 "missing" emails.

They would have to be pretty damn sure that Cheney was toast to give him up, though. The political fallout would be significant. Of course, that would also pin the blame outside the White House painting Cheney as rogue. Then, you pin Iraq and everything else on Cheney. Does he take it? Does Fitzgerald deal Rove to nothing? Don't know.

Or, it could be that Fitzgerald decided to give his team a lighter week around the holiday before nailing Rove next week.

I do not believe that the whole thing just went away.

It sucks not knowing, but at least it's not Ken Starr.
