Voting Machine War Games

This is still an issue. (WaPo)
To determine what it would take to hack a U.S. election, a team of cybersecurity experts turned to a fictional battleground state called Pennasota and a fictional gubernatorial race between Tom Jefferson and Johnny Adams. It's the year 2007, and the state uses electronic voting machines.....

The experts thought about all the ways to do it. And they concluded in a report issued yesterday that it would take only one person, with a sophisticated technical knowledge and timely access to the software that runs the voting machines, to change the outcome.

  • I'm still a big fan of paper ballots. Sure they can be corrupted too, but not so easily.
Surely democracy is important enough to take the trouble to scratch a mark on a piece of paper.

  • How the hell is this corporatized voting nonsense not on the front page of every paper in the nation?! It's wrong, wrong, wrong.

How dare they try to keep verifiable voting from us?

  • I agree with both of you. The answer is to print out a backup ballot that the voter then can check and deposit in a ballot box so recounts are possible.

  • I'm with cartledge, paper ballots.

I remember the near riots in 2000, and wonder how many times we could go through that before a public crisis. Once was a big deal, if it starts to happen every election, were in big trouble.

  • I think there will be more and more contested elections because the stakes have gotten so high.

  • Seems like a paper backup for what we consider our most sacred right is a reasonable request. How is this even a debate?
