And what exactly would you recommend, sir?

This is awfully public, very challenging and shaming to Maliki, and completely undermines any negotiating strength he might hold. This tells me that the "generals on the ground" recognize that Iraq is rapidly sliding out from under them.
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States told Iraq's leaders in stern language on Wednesday they must act swiftly to halt a surge in attacks by both Sunnis and Shi'ites that the United Nations said risks pitching the nation into civil war.....

In a blunt statement, Zalmay Khalilzad and General George Casey condemned "terrorists" and "death squads" and said: "We call on Iraqi leaders to take responsibility and pursue reconciliation not just in words, but through deeds as well."

On the other hand, it might force a change from the current "stand and bleed" strategy.

  • What a joke - I guess these demands from Casey and Khalilzad are supposed to give cover for the pre-midterm withdrawl. "Hey - we told the Iraqis to get their act together, but they didn't..."

What the hell else could they want from issuing these statements? Isn't Maliki doing everything he can to get things under control considering how weakened his power is?

  • There are Sunnis. There are Shia. There are Kurds. There are secular power players. One thing there are not is Iraqis. It's should be patently obvious at this point that there is no unifying national identity among the people who occupy the Western-created hunk of real estate we call Iraq.

  • Reality based, it gets wors, I assume you'll see today's post.

And EPM, that is the result of US policies early after the invasion.
