Bush Maliki Press Conference - first impressions

Did Bush look rattled to you? He seemed to alternate between rattled and angry. I would love to know just what took place in that room. Bush made a rueful face as he mentioned the "frank exchange" on Lebanon.

There was also an interesting section where Bush kept talking about why he listens to "generals on the ground." Something in that section made me wonder if Maliki tried to go over Gen. Casey's head?

Also, watching Bush, I kept wondering if he had suddenly become aware of just how bad Iraq really is. Did Maliki pierce the bubble? Has Gen. Casey been passing back "happy news?"

This was hardly the triumphant appearance the administration would've wanted. I would go as far as to say this was was a very bad day.

I'll probably post more when the transcript goes up later.

  • It couldn't make Bush happy to have to admit that the wonderful Maliki security plan he was praising back in June on his trip to Baghdad is a failure and they've got to send more troops into Baghdad to try and staunch the sectarian killings. it really does runi the feel-good November election story they want to start framing after Labor Day.

  • Check out the Times article today. It kinda' reads like a pre-fight argument before a major boxing match. Yes, I think this was a bad meeting for our Boy President.

  • Reality based, I don't think we're going to be hearing much more about a drwadown for awhile.

Copy editor, I blogged it last night in the prepress. It sounds like Maliki may have carried a message about the implications of blind US support for Israel. Remember, Maliki has long ties to both Syria and Iran.
