A little clip

I guess this is based on the internal polling they don't release.
As for Bush himself, he is curtailing his traditional August working vacation at the ranch so that he can barnstorm before the midterm elections. Their outlook thus far seems so ominous for the G.O.P. that one presidential adviser wants Bush to beef up his counsel's office for the tangle of investigations that a Democrat-controlled House might pursue.

Hiring people to defend the president "just in case"?

  • I guess even the shredders will have problems obliterating this admin's little foibles.

  • Well, you can shred the documents if people will lie for you, but when CIA folks are called up about prewar intel, their testimony and their copies....

  • We can only surmise they're worried about being able to pull off another Diebold miracle with the sentiment of the country so against the GOP that they're preparing their defense. It's certainly going to take a long time to tie all the loose ends of such a long and large lie.

  • Therein lies the problem with the Republican party. the president knows he has broken the law, so you know darn well his party does, but they look the otther way and let him continue on because to them, the party is more important than the Constitution.

  • Lew said it right - party over principle, maintaining power over the Constitution.

I still think they'll Diebold the election. The news meduia are so fucking stupid and/or corrupt that Rove, Blackwell, Jeb and company will literally have to be caught red-handed stuffing ballot boxes and/or fucking w/ the Diebold code before they'll question the results.

BTW, Mike, what did you think of tom Ricks this morning on MTP?

  • Libby, I don't think they can tie up all of the loose ends because of how many different people and agencies were involved and, ironically, that the hardball tactics they used to intimidate people also alienated them. How many CIA folks have come out directly or through leaks to tell the stories. State department folks, DOE, FBI. There's just too much out there for them to anything but try to mitigate or tie it all to Cheney and send him to his ranch.

Lew, you're right. The Republicans have put themselves in somewhat of a mafia situation, but I don't think it's just the president. Let's imagine investigations into Abramoff and Delay's now defunct PAC. Prewar intel, subpoenas with the threat of prison on torture, NSA, etc. This is their final shootout and if they lose the election and everything is uncovered, it could cost them decades.

Reality based, I'm not sure on Diebold nation wide. Really, the best you could safely do is a push of 3-5 points in a small number of districts. That might be enough to maintain a majority.

On Tom Ricks, very short segment. He made some really serious charges, but the whole thing seemed a little flat to me considering they were talking about screwing up a war that's cost so many American lives and pointing it directly at Rumsfeld.
