Picture of the Day - 3

“That’s my daughter, No. 9,” he said, pointing at a coffin coming out of the truck. “It’s a nice number, don’t you think? And No. 7, it’s a nice number, too. It’s my wife. And there’s No. 10. I hope they will be lucky.” HASSAN M. FATTAH

  • Reminiscent of the mass burials of Jews by the Nazis, no?

  • Any kind of mass burial is pretty creepy to me.

  • Here we go with the Jews again.

How about how the English, or French mass murdered a buck load more people during their colonization days? No one ever reflects on that.

Oh, I remember, they were brown/black. Nevermind...

  • There we go again with the "well Colonial British and French forces did XYZ, so that justifies what's going on".

I thought that we were in the early 21st century and not the late 19th. It would appear that the veneer of civilization that we like to cloak ourselves in is evidently thinner for some than others.

What I've learned from history is that the Hezbollah evolved as a direct consequence of Israeli occupation of Lebanon the last time. Hamas as a direct consequence of conditions in Palestinian refugee camps. And if memory serves, the Mossad and the Irgun predate both of them. Oh...that's right, I forgot. When you're an Israeli terrorist, you fall into the 'freedom fighter' category, no matter how many assassinations, bombings and murders you carry out.

The quote which accompanies this sad picture is one of the most poignant I've read in a long time. Thanks Mike.

  • re rumonov "How about how the English, or French mass murdered a buck load more people during their colonization days? No one ever reflects on that."

    Nonsense!

And besides, what good will reflecting on past the crimes of English and French do when there's a possibility of stopping Israel from commiting further crimes right now?

  • I'm gonna split the baby on this one. Killing innocents by the colonial powers was bad. Killing innocents by the Israelis is bad. Killing innocents is always bad. It takes real courage to take that controversial of a position, eh?

Past incidents don't justify current incidents. They are just as horrible. We're talking about the current incidents because they are current and ongoing. As Junstin points out, if I thought that somehow I could go back and stop the American slaughter of millions of Indians, that's all I would talk about. But I can't.

But, there is still hope of stopping at least some of the current killing. Even if we're talking about stopping only tens of deaths, small compared to historical examples, it's still what I want to do.
