Picture of the Day

President George W. Bush speaks with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Fouad Siniora, over the telephone at the Bush Ranch in Crawford, Texas August 12, 2006. Separately, Bush cautioned on Saturday the threat from a plot to detonate liquid explosives on commercial flights may not have passed and denied Democratic charges he was trying to use the crisis for political gains in an election year. I don't even know what to say. But notice, this is a White House handout photo. This is an image they want out there.

  • "Hello, wardrobe? I seem to be out of re ties and power suits."

"Hello, facilities? yeah, you guys hung my western White House sign so it covers the trim. Could you adjust that for me?"

  • "So, what are you wearing?"

Two thoughts, first of all, is it an insult to Siniora?

Second of all, I would guess they're trying to show the "working vacation image, to combat the perception that Bush has abandoned America again.

  • Ha! Lew! That sign was the first thing I noticed about that photograph.

Bush is on the telephone discussing WH options for correcting the sign debacle

Rice: “I propose that we pursue the status quo ante, by propping the sign back up in the corner, like it was before.”

Rumsfeld: “Hey, S**t happens, should the sign be re-hung? Absolutely. Will it be? I don’t know. All I know is that it is yet another known, unknown.”

Cheney: “We must create a new sign paradigm, if you will, by pursuing wall change and allow it to be recreated in a manner that suits our needs.”

Bolton: “We should push for reform of the United Carpenter’s Union. Their history indicates a clear pattern of putting the nail in the wrong stud and then taking an extra two-hour coffee break.”

Rove: “Call Tony Snow, get the Fox News Channel down there to document this atrocity, by the only holdover from the Clinton staff. Then replace the sign with one of those fish thingys… no wait… better yet a picture of Jesus or maybe the praying hands.”

  • That is a great comment. That is hysterical. You captured them all in their own weirdo styles.

The Rumsfeld rhwtoricals made me snort my drink.

"Is the sign on the trim? Yes. Would we like the sign to be on the trim? Certainly not. Should we redeploy the sign so that it doesn't touch the trim? I'm going to defer to General Pace on this one."

  • Mike, I loved your comments on Rumsfeld, "I'm going to defer to General Pace...", that's perfect!

Then poor hapless Pace will have to answer, on the record, for Rummy's screw-ups. The man is shameless.

  • Rumsfeld always passes on the questions that make him look bad, and then that poor guy next to him has to wander through the minefield not saying anything to make Rummy mad. It's chickenshit, really.
