Picture of the Day

This is Kurt Deschen. Lance Cpl. Kurt Dechen.

He didn't rape and kill some little girl ten years ago. He's not holding press conferences, or being extradited from Thailand.

There's no speculation.

He was shot and killed in Anbar serving his country.

I thought someone should notice.

  • I had to put on CNBC to get away from the JonBonet bullshit and get some political news. Nothing on Iraq on CNBC, of course, but at least there is no sanctimonious, hysterical JonBonet coverage. The "reporters" and "legal analysts" who spend all their time covering tabloid crime stories, like Dan Abrams, Nancy Grace, Jeffrey Toobin, are beneath contempt.

  • CNN's selection of what is news is very related to their ratings. Before Foxnews, they actually did news all but a last little bit where they would do celebrity and crazy news. (I miss Bernie Shaw.)

It depends on your package, but you might have CNNI which is pretty good in the daytime. Jim Clancy, your world today is pretty newsy. They run an hour of it on regular CNN at 12 eastern. (It's the only CNN I can really watch.)

One more thought. I don't think the population at large wants to see Iraq news at this point. I think it depresses them and they turn it off. That's one of the reasons. Nothing backing that, just a feeling.

  • Thank you.

  • CNN.

One more good reason to support public radio.

Thanks for this post. If the networks were really in the news business - as opposed to the exploitation business - they'd (sadly) be posting these photos every day.

  • Yeah, exploitation business is a great description for most.

I feel awful about this Marine and each and every casualty or psych-casualty in the war. Such a damned mess.

  • Sorry, I put a response up earlier and it didn't take.

Dave, They're not in the news business anymore. They're now profit centers.

Back in the day of three networks, the news services were loss leaders, they added prestige to their networks.

    No more. It's about viewers.

And, I go back and forth on public radio. We have both NPR and Pacifica here in Houston. Both have their flaws, but it's what I listen to in the car.

Copy editor, if you really want to flip out, on Hardball tonight, Barry McCaffrey pointed out that we're having a battalion a month (700 soldiers) worth of casualties. Not all of those injured are severe, and many return to duty, but still.....

  • JEEBUS..a whole friggin platoon? I want to blog on this..any site that bears out these numbers?

I read the names of every Cali soldier when the 2000th was killed here in my town. I wasn't going to just read their names. I said things like: In Bakersfield 5 soldiers will never see a beautiful sunset again. Or hear the laughter of a child..

They are a generation tossed away again..just like 'nam..and I know people hate when I compare it to 'nam but they can kiss my ass. The physical and emotional damage to those that lived through the horror was huge and a life-long cross to bear for many if not most..

And this occupation of Iraq and Afganistan, there are many more injuries of the limbs I think I read..as in..missing one or two.

  • McCaffrey just did the math live. The transcripts are supposed to come up on the MSNBC site within 24 hours, so, by 5 this afternoon. (go to shows or whatever and then look for transcripts for Hardball for friday.)

    Search for battalion.

    It should be there.

  • I've often wondered, how many people join the army to "serve their country", and how many people enlist to "pay the bills" or "go through college"?
