Americans know the Iraq war causes terrorism

This polling trend is probably why the White House has launched its desparate bid to tie Iraq/Iran/Al Qaeda together into the mushy, impossible construct of Islamic Fascism.

Angus Reid: In the long term, do you think there will be more or less terrorism in the United States because the U.S. went to war in Iraq?

More - 60%, Less 31%.

You know they must be looking at similar internal polling (and crapping themselves.) That's why the Republicans on the Hill are going to be focusing solely on "security" issues over the next month.

Nothing like rushed, politically motivated legislation to make the country safer, eh?

  • Thanks Mike. I've taken the liberty of linking to this post from mine on a new report on actual terror prosecution figures in the US.
Let's hope the 'security' facade is running out of steam.

  • I saw that article. I didn't really know how to write it up because I could paint it either as an effort running out of steam and leads or the early spike surged by a backlog. And then there's the whole blurring of non-terrorism convictions, immigration, larceny fraud, etc.

I couldn't make up my mind what it was telling me.

  • Watched "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation" yesterday, and the Republican machine continues to crank on the fact that there hasn't been an attack IN [not on] the U.S. since 9/11. There seemed to be a shift, though, designed to dismiss how badly the war is going. The line was that it doesn't matter how bad it seems to be, because the Iraq war has effectively "pushed" all that terrorist activity back across the ocean to a front "over there" in Baghdad, and that it's better there than in NYC. Sadly, this logic will probably make sense to many voters.

  • The "fight them over there so we don't fight them here" talking point.

That's very hard to counteract regardless of the truth of the matter. It relies on the (oh let's use the nice word) nativism of Americans who see all middle easterners as the same.
