The Foley coverup

The mainstream is starting to pick up the story of the Republican leadership coverup of cyber-molester Rep. Mark Foley. (That's what the Democrats are calling him, and CNN will like that.)

And now they're turning on each other. Late PM, Rep. Reynolds says he told Hastert. A little later, Hastert issued a statement contradicting his first story, now saying he knew, but didn't know.

We've also got Rep. Alexander on the record, and Boehner has that little matter of the retraction this morning to clear up.

As said on Hardball recently, if you're explaining, you're losing.

(Above all else, this is a sad statement on the media. Almost six years, a failing war launched on lies, Abramoff and the highest level of corruption in decades, four Congressmen already indicted for four different money scandals, the NIE just Monday, and this is what the media chooses to really go after.

I'll bet NBC is gutted that they didn't get Foley on that "To catch a predator" series on Dateline.)

I find myself wondering how differently this story would be covered if Foley had actually touched the kid. The story would actually be much bigger, but I don't think the press would pursue it as gleefully.

  • Let's wait to see if any kid comes forward to say Foley did touch him. We're still in the early stages of this. While the GOP took nearly a year to turn up nothing (because they looked for nothing) ABC News turned up a shitload of stuff in a just a short period of time. I'm not so sure the Foley end of the scandal is over just yet.

As for the cover-up, the Times and the Post both front-page the story above the fold. CNN spent the first five minutes of the news on it, talking specifically about the cover-up, as did NBC Nightly News. The leadership are turning on each other, the members are turning on the leadership (check out the quotes from King and Shays in the Times piece) and the voters are no doubt going to turn on the GOP. Tonight on CNN, callers into the news show all talked about the cover-up, tied the leadership to it and said how disgusted they were about it. One guy with a southern accent said "GOP stands for Grand Old Perverts."

If anything, this ought to tamp down that vaunted GOP base vote in November. Unless the GOP can find something else to divert people and bring them back to the polls. But whatever it is, it better be good.

And btw, they're also still trying to quell the Woodward book firestorm. Whatever little bump they got after the 9/11 anniversary is going to be long gone after this stuff gets done (and Rasmussen already has Bush down to 39% today.)

Wow. It really does feel like 1994 again. The September bump in the polls is erased by a scandal that embroils the incumbent party and crystallizes all that seems wrong with Washington these days.

  • "grand old perverts." A Dem would never say something like that.

The coverup is the real story, but if it was a coverup of Delay, for instance, it wouldn't get this kind of play. Sad but true.

    The Republicans are Reeling.

I do think that ABC was probably pointed to this by somebody. I really think this is political hardball. I may be wrong, but these unrelated "leaks" and revelations of stuff that's been out a year, are suddenly clustering in this tidal wave.

(Note the timing to overwhelm the press conferences on the last day of session.)

I will say this, I doubt that's all that's out there. I don't know if any others will be released, but if this is a coordinated campaign, there's probably one or two being held back for a rainy day.

The problem for the Repubs with the Woodward is that it is going to burn for weeks. It'll be inserted in small ways in a whole lot of stories.(much like the NIE.) It will be offered as a counterbalancing view.

And, Rasmussen under 40 is a big deal because it's usually points up, and I assumethat's before the Woodward or Foley fires.

(I'm not really keeping up with every turn on the Foley story, there are other people who do that better, but IO am trying to add bits where I think it affects the greater politics.)

But, I think the Foley story is just getting ready to bloom. Imagine Hastert etc having to talk about this on campaign stops. To answer question after question.
