Still no mention of Arar

The NYTimes and WaPo both have big stories on the detainee/torture legislation, and yet neither one mentions Maher Arar, the innocent Canadian who was rendered mistakenly to Syria and tortured.

To me, this is a key question in the debate, the assumption that the US would be torturing on assumed guilt, and none of the articles are even mentioning it.

  • This is a stunning example of the press malfeasance. The Arar case is probably a data point Bush is using to demonstrate the success for his double secret interrogation program.

  • It just blows my mind that this can be discussed without a mention.

Admittedly, Arar was more about rendition and the US didn't dirctly hold the battery cables, but the underlying issue is there.

This guy was innocent, and would've been cleared under normal practice. Instead, he was sent to torture without review.

  • Moreover, the Canadian report is very critical of the US government's use of the "intelligence" and the subsequent actions of the government. It shines a light of the reactionary and ineffective actions of the Bush plan to "keep us safe."

  • The thing that really jumped out at me from that report was the recommendation that the Canadian government not share anymore intel with the US on that basis.

Talk about keeping us safe. The Bush policy is cutting off avenues of intel.
