Anybody want to lay odds on Hastert resigning?

I put those odds as pretty good. I think it ends tomorrow.

Just a feeling.

  • When Atrios starting running the over/under on Hastert resigning, he put the line at Friday before 5 PM/after Friday at 5 PM.

I took before Friday at 5 PM.

I think I'm looking good on that bet.

The question is, where does the story go from there? I noticed on CNN tonight that Republicans were working hard to turn the story onto Dems, claiming that they leaked the story, they had the info about this, they did nothing with that info until they could use it for political purposes, blah, blah, blah.

So far, that story hasn't resonated, but Joe Johns (a man even dumber and more gullible than Ed Henry) seemed to read straight off the RNC talking points for his taped piece on Cooper 360 about who leaked the Foley story.

I'm dubious that many other mainstream reporters will follow Johns' lead and regurgitate RNC talking points. I think the mainstream news people get this story, the blase way with which the GOP leadership dealt w/ it in the last few years, and the dishonesty and ineptitude with which they have tried to cover it up.

Still, the Mark Halperins and the Ed Henrys (and the Joe Johns) are still out there, ready to gleefully repeat Rove's talking points and muddy the waters of the story. Whether that actually works or not remains to be seen. My guess is not. But, as you've often noted before mike, trying to guess how people are going to react to something these days is often a crapshoot.

  • The Dems as the villian isn't flying anywhere but Limbaugh. I saw some of that effort, too.

The thing is, it's an effort at a Dem trap. It's an effort to start a debate forcing the Dems to talk about a secondary issue. (I'll do a brief post on that.)

Let me add, that my impression is that they all respect Brian Ross (not the man so much, but his work.)

And that story is going to bounce around. It's an extremely plausible lie.

  • The Hill is now reporting that the source of the emails to the news media was a registered republican congressional staffer. They've got documentation.

Is documentation enough to kill the wingnut meme that Pelosi and Reid cooked up the scheme as a campaign stunt?

  • Yeah, Brian Ross said as much yesterday.

  • The funny thing to think about is how many millions of Americans have already bought the Dem-hold-leak-at-election fantasy. For many, that is it and always will be. Hassert's resignation will be viewed as politically enduced by those clever, evil Democrats.

You think Rush will air a retraction/apology? LOL.

I'm going to take the over (post 5pm Friday). I'm feeling gun shy since I got hammered on the Iran bombing pool.

  • The pools are all just wild assed guessing. Don't feel bad, it doesn't cost anything.

And, no, no apology from Limbaugh. He'll just up his perscription and push right on ahead.

And, I don't think the Dem leak myth matters all that much. It's only going to be preserved within the farthest gone. And, if the Foley revelations keep getting worse, I think it'll drown out alot of it.
