  • This made me wonder... those of us of very particular stripes, especially Democratic, are energized by this election. But I'm wondering if the "vast unwashed" are so totally turned off by the political atmosphere that turn-out will be very low. I hope that helps the Dems, but who knows. I did see a poll in the Atlanta paper Sunday that indicated that 100% of respondents were interested in this election, and that 86% definitely planned to vote (which of course would never happen)... so maybe I'm totally out to lunch. But I just wonder about the disillusioned GOP base and the middle ground that is sick of everything in Washington. I dunno... I predict it will be a very low turnout, or a very high turnout... or somewhere in between! Howzat for covering the bases.

Cheers! Keep up the great job.

  • All indications that I've seen seem to be that Dem/Independent turnout should be pretty high for a midterm. The question is really the pro-Bush/pro-Republican turnout.

I also think turnout rates will vary pretty significantly regionally. The anger in Ohio and the Northeast seems to indicate a high Dem leaning turnout, while down here in "red" Texas, with few competitive races I would expect turnout to be remarkably low. (Probably helps Dems here.)

But, you're right. You never know what's going to happen until gameday.

  • I find each of the cheerleaders' faces to be a punch line...

The one due north or the yawner with her finger in her mouth.... the one due east who looks puzzled, as though Bush is speaking some Martian language or something (or maybe she was expecting George Clooney and just can't figure it out)... the two just south of the yawner who appear to be sharing an inside joke at Bush's expense... and the comatose Stepford gaze of the gal in the center.

No one, in any case, seems the least bit interested... And just think, they'll have to spend the rest of their lives being laughed at at family functions for wearing those ridiculous ribbons, all so they could be props in a photo-op.

  • Yeah, I thought it captured alot.

    And, I remember when I was 16, I didn't give a damn about politics.

  • That must be a very small, very rural high school. NO ONE dresses like that anymore. Not since the 70's.

Like most conservative areas it also looks like someone's been peeing in their gene pool.

  • Since this race is partly about race, immigration, "border security," the whole Harold Ford thing, I think it means the advance men did exactly what they were supposed to do. You know?

(And I would be curious whether those bows are a normal part of that uniform.)

  • In response to the issue Cephas raises about turnout...I was going to respond that a low turnout should actually hurt the Democrats. A high turnout would mean that people are very excited about the election and right now the polls are saying that its largely Democrats who are pumped about the election.

I looked into it a little more though and found out what the stats were in 1994 (see here) Overall turnout was up in 1994, but only very slightly (2.3% compared to the last midterm in 1990). Some districts had increased turnout but some, including some tight races, had decreased. The only consistent thing that can be said is that GOP turnout was up while Democratic turnout was down. I'd predict something of a reversal in that this November, but the overall change in turnout may be negligible.

  • EPM,

Well, if you look at the Bush campaign travel schedule, he is going more and more rural. He's stopping here in Houston today for Delay's old seat, but then he's heading out to small town Montana.

    mephi,

I really think in a midterm it's the balance of the turnout. I think that's what you're saying.

One of the reasons the GOP has been able to maintain that turnout even in small elections is that they convinced the evangelicals that it was part of their religion that they should vote. I don't know if that will hold this time.

I'm sort of throwing out the polls on this election. I think it's all going to be turnout and there's just no good way to guage that until game day.

If I were guessing, I would say strong Dem turnout, strong anti-Bush independent turnout, weak pro-bush independent turnout and medium pro bush republican turnout. (strong and weak relative to other midterms.)

Also, alot of it is going to be regional, and I don't have the tools to really get into that, but, as example, in Missouri, I would expect really good turnout because of the headlining McCaskill Talent race, while here in Texas, it will be low. And either variation will have an impact on the other races down the ballot.

  • The yawner was out the night before with the Dub and drank a whole keg by themselves. I think she's entitled to a little yawn.

    cheerleaders yawn at Bush

First of all, let me just introduce myself. I am on of the three Silver Creek cheerleading coaches. I am writing in reguards to the comments that were posted about our team directly. Let me just say that our girls really felt honored to be a part of this election rally. Although, they had prior commitments to compete at a national level cheerleading competition that same day, our girls decided that they would really love to be a part of both events. It is unfortunate that this photo was taken at their expense, because they were VERY interested and happy to hear what Bush had to say. I am just curious to know how long this photographer stood there staring and waiting for this perfect opportunity. As for the hair bows, these girls left straight from Bush's rally, drove out of state, and competed on a National level. I am not sure if you are familiar with competitive cheerleading, however, this is a pretty normal attire for such an event. In closing, let me just say that it disgusts me to no end to hear people talk about a very good group of girls they know NOTHING about. You think it is bad for our girls to be a part of this all for a photo-op, but here there are grown adults being entertained by degrading children....you ask yourselves, which is worse?

  • I'd like to introduce myself, I'm the "yawner" in the photo. My coach has already taken up for us, but I would like to post my feelings on the matter. I'm not trying to make excuses for my actions, but excuse me for being tired. I guess no one has ever been tired in a public place before? We had cheerleading practice the night before, not partying with Bush "drinking a keg". We had been at the school waiting since 8am and Bush didn't speak until 1:30 in the afternoon. We were very interested in the subjects he discussed besides the "looks" or expressions we had on our faces. I'm disappointed in the photographer because it seems he was more interested in us than Bush. Also, as for the hair bows, they are meant to catch fans or judges attentions so I guess they worked.

  • I almost yawned at the blogs....FYI, Sellersburg is 10 miles north of Louisville. It's pronounced Lou-a-ville in case you left-winged, narrow-minded jerks aren't educated enough to
pronouce it correctly. These cheerleaders showed more respect the entire time they were there than your cheap photographer did the one second it took to take the photo. You should take lessons from these girls, they are decent, polite, and respectful people. They have more integrity at their age than all of you,who have nothing better to do than talk about a brief moment in time.
    Get a life people!

  • Well hello I would just like to inform you that I am one of the Silver Creek cheerleaders (not pictured in the photo) and i just wish you all would get a life. It's so sad that you all just sit around talking about people. How old are you? Im 16 and probably more mature than you. That's sad. Maybe you should take a dose of maturity. I'm sorry but we were there for 6 hours before he even arrived and later that day we had to go straight to one of our competitions. I mean do you notice how Bush is blurry and our cheerleaders are completely focused on? I wonder if he was waiting for the right moment to make us look like we didn't care. Maybe if you were there you would know that he was making a few jokes. So why would we be embarrassed because someone took one bad picture? Hmmm...

  • Just to let everyone know, I'm the cheerleader with the finger in her mouth. I really don't appreciate all the comments you low lifes have posted about us. You can't tell me that someone hasn't ever taken a bad picture of you, we just got screwed over and people like you posted ours on the internet to make yourselves feel better. Even if you don't agree with President Bush at least have the descency to show some respect toward the leader of our country. Maybe you guys would be embarrassed to have this picture up on the internet of you but I think our team feels honored that we got invited to this rally. And I highly doubt that the president or as you say "DUB" would take a cheerleader out to drink the night before so think before you say stuff.
