(Uncaptioned today on the AFP/Iraq wire.)

(Maybe from this?) AFP: Baghdad now forced to 'export' bodies

  • This is a very sad quote from the article you linked to:

""All this blood flowing is about to become the third river in Iraq," said Salem Hassan, in a bitterly ironic nod to Iraq's traditional name, the "Land of the Two Rivers" - the Tigris and the Euphrates."

  • Every once in awhile in the Iraq coverage I run across a particularly literary quote like that reminds me that Iraq was the best educated, most literate, most secular middle eastern country before the US got involved with them.

I was also struck by the concept that there have been so many bodies, the "holy land" cemetaries have been filled up. There is no more sacred ground.
