Picture of the Day - 5

A wounded Palestinian woman lies on the ground as others run for cover after an Israeli tank opened fire at them at Beit Hanoun town in northern Gaza strip, November 3, 2006. (Suhaib Salem/Reuters)

"Israeli troops fired at a large crowd of unarmed Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip today as the women approached a mosque to help Palestinian militants holed up inside. Two women were killed and about 10 were injured, according to hospital workers."

  • Mike, did you see this post from Billmon? I know you have that 'feeling' about an adventure in Iran.

  • No, thanks, that is pretty interesting. I've seen other looks at the same possibility.

That lame duck congress would be his window because once the conflict starts the Dems couldn't pull back out. It's not like a tax law you can immediately repeal.

(And one of the more cynical pointed out, that it would be a way to give the Dems their own Iraq in a way, because it would make things worse under their watch. Pinprick bombing and then pin the aftermath on them.)

(And generally, I don't normally read Billmon, or Digby for that matter. They're very good, but I tend more towards the short post/lots of links sites. I hardly ever read editorials either. Just not how I'm wired.)

So, if you see a good one, let me know.

  • Taking a page from the US... What do you call a human shield? Target practice.

Welcome to the new rules of war.

  • Yeah, this is such a messy situation. The Israelis had trapped these guys they claimed were fighters, and the unarmed women tried to walk through.

How do you let it get to the point that you have to fire on them?

  • I saw this video on televsion. Horrifying, and doubly so because this was so absolutely NOT necessary.

  • Exactly. I understand the Israelis wanted to keep the women from geting through, but how do you let it come to shooting unarmed women. The damage from that is far greater than anything that could've happened letting the men go.

    It's an atrocity.
