"A comprehensive test of the military draft machinery"

This is only a test. In the event of a real draft....
The Selective Service System is planning a comprehensive test of the military draft machinery, which hasn't been run since 1998.

The agency is not gearing up for a draft, an agency official said Thursday. The test itself would not likely occur until 2009.

Meanwhile, the secretary for Veterans Affairs said that "society would benefit" if the U.S. were to bring back the draft and that it shouldn't have any loopholes for anyone who is called to serve. VA Secretary Jim Nicholson later issued a statement saying he does not support reinstituting a draft.

How fast do you think Jim Nicholson got the call to retract his comments?

  • what do you think are the odds of a draft?

i don't think either party would try in britain as it currently stands because it would be so unpopular that they would be out on their ass very very quickly.

but in the US, recruiters are finding it difficult but they are still talkign about increasing the size of the military.

what do you think are the odds?

  • The odds of a draft are practically nothing. Any Congressman or Senator who voted yeah would be out of office at the next election. The President won't do it because it would imply that his failure is that much bigger.

So, with the current situation I would say it's extremely unlikely.

What amused me in this was the Sec of VA endorsing a draft only to be obviously slammed by one of the political operatives the minute they heard about it.
