Pentagon considering overseas recruitment centers

Holy cow!
The armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks -- including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer -- according to Pentagon officials.

This might be something that was written up as a proposal with no likelihood of implementation, but I still think it captures the larger problem of an overextended and broken military.

  • Shocking, isn't it? Add this to the huge numbers of contractors in Iraq, and you get a good sense of how fast the America we learned about in school is slipping away from us.

  • Good point about the contractors, the same thing, more or less laundered through an independent company.

And, again, I have a hunch this is just one proposal point in a much bigger discussion, but it's still telling that it's even being discussed.

During the cold war, such a thing would never be contemplated.
