Picture of the Day - 3

PKK female guerillas fire a rifle during military exercises in the mountains of northern Iraq's Kurdish autonomous region. In a part of the world known for the subordination of women, nowhere do females play a greater role than in the ranks of this Kurdish movement.(AFP/File/David Furst)

  • The west doesn't want to give the Kurds their own state because it would very likely open a guerilla war with Turkey(more than now.)

That last sentence is an interesting version of empowerment.

And, yeah, I really do like this picture.

Every once in awhile I run across one that speaks to me, and this one has echoes of resistance movements, of "the fight" throughout modern history.

  • Great. Kurdish "girls with guns."

Reminds me of the pictures we used to see back in the day of female Viet Cong guerilla fighters.

  • Yeah, I got the worldwide flash, too, but to me I got a Latin America and Central Europe flash.
