Picture of the Day - 4

Iraqi soldiers bit the heads off frogs and ate the heart of a rabbit as signs of courage on Wednesday at a ceremony to transfer Najaf province, home to one of Shi'ite Islam's holiest shrines, from U.S. to Iraqi control.

  • weird coincidence, I just saw this picture on some yahoo/ap slideshow about 20 minutes ago. There's another photo in there of the same scene, but with the rabbit in much worse condition.

  • I pull alot of the pictures out of Yahoo. It's the best source I've found for the most immediate news photos as the wire services get them up there often within less than an hour.

    It's also easy to search.

And, I saw the other one, too, but was a little grosser, so I went with this.

  • tiny animals shouldn't have to suffer for our 'manliness'. they could just bite each other's ears if they need some kind of pain experience.

  • So mutilating small, defensless animals is what passes as a sign of courage? F'n twisted, man... F'n twisted.

  • It's just really weird. I haven't been able to not think about it. I'm guessing that it is intended to show some willingness towards killing, a bravery towards blood, plus the more direct primal thing.

    But, it's just really weird.

I also kept imagining the reactions of the US soldiers who must have been standing bored for an hour during this ceremony and then this happens. I don't think the blood would shock them at all, but just the cultural strangeness. I think it would be hard not to react.
