Worries in the background - Egypt

Egypt detained 10 prominent Muslim Brotherhood members, as well as maybe hundreds of more radical students. What caught my eye, though, was this,
Officials have not said why the latest arrests were carried out, but correspondents said it might be related to recent newspaper reports suggesting the movement was setting up a military wing.

I would put this way down the list of worries, but I hadn't seen it before.

  • This is not good. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is far more non-violent and political than other incarnations of the MB. The radicals have been those like Zawahiri's Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which crosses over into al Qaeda. Stress from Iraq no doubt will cause more apolitical (read: violent) actions.

  • Yeah. Egypt has had various violent groups riseup and conduct attacks, but they've largely been small and not too popular.

I don't any more about this than this mention, but if their talking about a militia of some sort, even a small one, it could be very destabilizing. The only real focus would be the government either defensively or offensively, which would likely create more government violence which would build the cycle.

And, Islamic Brotherhood is in effect the main opposition party, so any conflict would automatically be very political.
