  • In a region of the world where grudges are still held over centuries-old conflicts, how can this carnage ever lead to a lasting peace?

America (and Americans) have too short a history to appreciate this dynamic. In many way's we're still fighting our own Civil War, and that was "only" a century and a half ago. These people have bad ethinc, tribal and sectarian mojo that goes back far more than that... and is equally deeper ingrained in the psyche of the people.

We lost the war when we thought it was our war to win.

  • And, even beyond the memories, even beyond this generation, there will be this vast trove of images and videos that will stoke the hatreds. This evidence will exist for ever.

I find that last point extremely intriguing.
