A polling turnaround

Think back to 2004 when Cheney was running around the country playing scary death man and appreciate just how much things have changed.
The (WaPo-ABC) poll also finds that the public trusts congressional Democrats over Bush to deal with the conflict (in Iraq) by a margin of 60 percent to 33 percent.

(Bush approval 33%. - "Only two presidents have had lower approval ratings on the eve of a State of the Union speech." Nixon before he resigned, and Truman in 1952.)

Also, the villainizing didn't stick, on Pelosi - "A majority (54 percent) approves of the way she is handling her new job, with 25 percent disapproving and 21 percent undecided."

  • Even Bush's terrorism numbers are bad - 52% disapprove of his handling of the issue, only 46% approve. And that's the best number he has on any issue by far.

Amazing numbers overall. 66% now say the war was not worth fighting. 65% oppose the surge plan. 59% want the Congress to block it. 55% say the preznut has not made the country safer. Just 42% trust him to handle a crisis.

You can see why GOP strategists are already panicking about '08. Bush is REALLY damaged goods and the damage is bleeding off onto the party as a whole. Things are so bad, I ALMOST believe a Dem could win the WH in '08 (but I'm not actually there yet.)

  • The numbers really are shocking. It's starting to eat down into that 30+ % base, and that must be causing alarm.

Again, I'm wondering how long until Bush gets the Nixon visit to tell him he's destroying the party for a decade.

And, '08 is so far away, but you're not alone. You can always tell the politician's assessment by who jumps in. With all the heavyweights jumping in(unlike in '04)you do sense that they feel the opening.
