Questions on the Iraq staff turnover.

Yesterday, early evening, ABC reported that all the top spots in Iraq were being turned over. (Outlined in this post.)

By this morning, everybody's got it, most as their top story. (WaPo, AP, Reuters, AFP, USAToday, LATimes, McClatchy)

I'll be very curious if the White House can spin this positive, rather than facing the logical questions.

"Isn't this a repudiation of almost 4 years of strategy?"

Or, "You've replaced or tranferred everyone involved in Iraq except for Rice, Cheney, and the President, what have they done right that the others did not?"

Or, "Isn't this just an effort to replace personnel who had voiced the opinion, the broadly held opinion, that a surge in Iraq is the wrong thing to do?"

  • Your last statement.

He's gone against the people, the Congress, and his Generals in the field (in fact he's now relieved them of their command).

I disagreed with invading Iraq, but the country and the Congress was behind him.

I think this is dangerous, now. To continue this carnage against the will of the people, the Congress, and the military. Sad, sad, situation.

I did not want to look at this possibility before, but Congress might have to cut spending for this war.

  • I just don't know what's going to happen. The pressure keeps rising and Bush keeps pushing on. A rational person would have let go by now.

I wonder about cutting spending. I would think they might be better served to blackmail him on everything else, holding up money for every one of his pet projects.

I do think the committee investigations would do alot to create pressure. If you're wonky enough to read this blog, you know all the massive mistakes and gaps that took place in Iraq, and as those are exposed, it will create even more public hatred. (Yes I said hatred. The truth is very ugly.)

The only problem with this course is that it's not going to be immediate.

  • If those investigations highlight the wrongs, they will go far to help.

I'm afraid they will become too political.

Biden is having hearings. Does he want to find solutions, or position himself for 08'?

The evidence IS there to make the President/Republicans look bad, even criminal. (espically Cheney)

I want solutions, not revenge. I want accountability, not a platform for Democratic Presidential hopefulls.

I'm waiting to see the reaction of the American people to his replacing his Generals. That's what he has based his military decisions on.

Now he'll have puppet Generals to swear in Congressional hearings that we need to escalate this war.

I've come to the decision that this President has to be stopped, this war has to end.

The only way to do that, is to cut the money.

I'm even ready to sign on to impeachment; another move I've not considered before, even though many have been calling for it for years.

  • The investigations will, without question, be political. It's just a question of what kind of political.

They could be used to primarily to influence policy, or they could be used to damage Republicans, or they could be used for platform and grandstanding.

Probably be a collection of all three.

You bring up a very good point about Biden and '08. Probably should add Clinton on the Defense committee, and Obama/Clinton on Judiciary.

And, I agree on the war. I, like everybody else, am waiting for the Bush speech next week.

It can't be as good as it needs to be.
