A new kind of politics

Top AP headline for the last 4 hours....?

Obama ridicules Cheney's Iraq comments.

I don't know what that says exactly, but after watching the Dems for the last six years I just wonder who else could pull that off.

On a broader level, let's look at the last week or so. First Obama eviscerates Australian PM Howard, and then responds to a Clinton attack by twisting the Lincoln bedroom/cronyism knife.

Why is it I'm liking him more and more?

(Josh Marshall's "bitch-slap" theory of politics. Then and now.)

  • The key to the bitch slap is that your response must ridicule the bitch (Cheney, Howard, whoever) and not even accept the original criticism as worthy of being addressed. You have to laugh at the bitch without appearing to be particularly (personally) bitter. It's all very Judo. Make the enemy fall on his own sword.

Obama seems to get this... for now. I'm not sure traditional, inside the beltway pols do.

  • "It is all very Judo..." Cool.

My impression from the early going is that he has a great braintrust running his campaign. The imagery they produce, the statements and timing, the way he comes forward and recedes in the news.

They are very much in control of their candidate in the media.

I would contrast that to the Clinton camp who feel the need to be front and center every day.
