The "surge" thus far

If you're not willing to wait the six months Joe Lieberman and the other Bush loyalists encourage, Reality Based Educator pointed to this McClatchy article in the comments that takes a detailed look at some of the "metrics." (That's what you call dead bodies when you're a cool defense expert.)

Short version, "the surge" thus far is having little significant effect, death squad killings are down, bombing fatalities are up, and the overall level of reported violence in Baghdad is more or less the same.

The timespans involved are pretty short, so I don't know about hard conclusions, but there has not been any appreciable dip in violence thus far.

But, maybe if we wait six more months.......

  • But, maybe if we wait six more months...

For the insurgents, death squads and sectarian gangs to adjust their tactics, rendering our "new" tactics impotent...

Insurgencies, sectarian warfare, and gang violence are all about one-ups-manship. Short of a complete, decisive re-occupation (bureaucratic as well is military) we will continue down this path of incremental chaos. Period. Not only will the violence increase, but the sophistication of the armaments and munitions will increase, as we've seen. The longer we fight their game on their turf, we will lose, in a military sense.

  • The six more months was meant to be sarcasm. Is there a font for that?

In Iraq, this administration has fully rushed in to the battle of Al Qaeda's choosing.

And the US is trying to "win" against an enemy whose goal (at least against the US) has very little to do with "winning" and losing. Their goal is to harry, exhaust, and survive.

  • Sorry for any misunderstanding. I took your statement as being a snarky nod to the Lieberman and his ilk and I ran with it...

My rant was directed to the faceless "they" who actually spout the six months till success drivel. They've been doing it since March of '03.

  • And they still are.
