    To the rest of the world, it would be viewed differently.

    This image and the protests send a message around the world that Columbia could be "in play."

  • You make a good point about the "rest of the world" and our diminished moral standing.

    I guess I'm worried that such provocative acts, like American flag burning, will make progressive Americans react viscerally -- and unproductively -- toward Latin America.

  • Yes and no.

    Maybe it would inflame the people in Nebraska and Alabama, but the leaders, policymakers, trade brokers all know that Latin America is our backyard and that it is absolutely critical.

    They've been dealing with various forms of "leftists" for three generations now.
