Is there any position Romney hasn't flipped?

Mitt Romney has flipped positions on stem cells, gay marriage, tax cuts, gun control, abortion, and gay rights. (That I can think of off the top of my head.)

Now, he gets caught lying about hunting.
The Republican presidential contender has told audiences on several occasions, most recently this week in gun-savvy — and early voting — New Hampshire, that he has been a longtime hunter. But it turns out he has been on only two hunting trips.

I understand the argument several of you have made that Romney is the likely Republican nominee because somebody has to win and McCain supports the surge and Giuliani is endorsing public funding of abortions, but it's just unbelievable to me that with all these patently political position changes(lies) Romney could win.

(Yesterday on NPR, Newt Gingrich offered "advice" to the candidates that sounded like a blueprint for his run....)

  • Yes, maybe it's just that Romney's the best (imo) of a bad field. But he's - I hope this doesn't sound dumb - presidential. And 6+ years of Bush have left Repubs (and the rest of us) hungry for that.

Maybe it's just that, being from Mass., I'm familiar with Romney, and not as much with some of the others in the field.

He'll shine in debates. And believe me, he'll handle the flip-flops.

  • Romney drives me mad and I admit that I have problems with his religion having grown up in that cult. And it really is a cult. It may seem harmless to anyone from the outside but growing up in it you see the real side. I was brain-washed and it pretty much screwed up my brain pretty good.

I still have nightmares about that "religion." It took away my childhood, isolated me in school and I can not vote for someone who supports such an organization. I can tell you stories believe me.

That might make be bigoted but I can't support him one bit.

Of course, all of that is in addition to his flip-flops and being too conservative.

  • Abi, Romney definitely has gravitas.

Doonesbury this week has been tearing Romney apart, and one of their lines that stuck with me is that he's a news anchor.

And on TV and in televised debates, that will play big. He does very well in front of the camera.

But I just find the multitude and magnitude of the position changes mindboggling. Have we ever seen a candidate that has done this much of it? Maybe an issue or two, but on every issue?

Again somebody has to win and from the little I've seen of him he is really good in front of cameras, but I just can't get my mind around the idea that he can flip on all these issues and still win the Repub nomination.

    .....

James, I have largely stayed away from the Mormon angle because I find alot of the conversation fairly tinged with a sanction of discrimination.

To me, it's not an issue at all, but then again, I'm not religious. I'm used to candidates who espouse a religion that I don't believe.

You obviously have an experience so I'm not going to judge, but his religion doesn't affect me any more than any other. HE's made no sign that he's going to try to turn America into a Mormon state so beyond that, I don't care.

(That's one of my many problems with Bush is that he's tried to foist HIS religion on the country.)

And, frankly, I doubt the Mormon church is any more cultlike than alot of the hardline Christian sects, it's just that they're larger and have more influence on American culture and this their practices don't seem as odd.

    Seen Jesus Camp?

  • so strange.

in this country people would LOSE votes if they were always seen hunting

  • Well, those who are pro hunting are avidly so as it is considered some measure of manhood, and it's a really big deal to them.

Can't really tell you why, but maybe it's because it represents a way for powerless men in suburbia whose lives are determined by their bosses and creditors to claim some sense of power.

I don't know why, I don't understand it, but violence is definitely equated with masculinity in America. Look at our movies.

  • Romney as news anchor: The thing is, to me his is a parody of an anchorman... like the clean-cut, plastic-haired counterpart to Will Ferrell's Ron Burgundy.
