Picture of the Day - 2

Iraq's Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr speaks in Kufa, near Najaf, May 25, 2007. Powerful anti-American Shi'ite cleric al-Sadr appeared in public for the first time in months on Friday and again demanded that U.S. troops get out of Iraq. REUTERS/Ali Abu Shish

  • I wonder where al-Sadr would be today if not for George W. Bush... Tell my again how many American lives Saddam's regime claimed?

When someone say's were more secure with Saddam deposed, dead and gone, hold up this picture.

  • If Saddam were still in power, he would be, at best, the third Shia representative, but more likely he would be far below that.

  • Also...

If Saddam were still in power -- specifically, if we hadn't invaded and occupied Iraq and set up a paper parliament -- Ahmadinejad would most likely still be a mayor.

I find it interesting, the number of fringe players and violent actors we've buoyed to prominence and "legitimacy" in our efforts to crush fringe players and violent actors.

I'm reminded of the cartoon whose caption is, "The beatings will continue until morale improves."

  • I think that's a really big, and as yet fairly unreported point.

This entire movement in Iran, including the nuclear drive stem from a sense of insecurity they feel since they were included in the axis of evil and then Iraq was invaded.

Ahmadinejad defeated the previous "reformist" government by claiming to be tough against the threat of the Americans.
