Obama posts $32.5 million

Wow. Not only did Obama post a jawdropping $32.5 million fundraising quarter, but even more impressively, at least $31 million of that is just primary money.

It'll take a few weeks before we get the other campaigns' breakdowns, but I would guess that nobody even comes close on primary money.

With relatively little press, Obama is generating a wave.

Later: (AP) Clinton raised around $27 million, $21 million in primary money.

  • These are heady, but early days. I'm not discounting the power of money in today's politics -- indeed money = voice... no money, no voice in today's America. It's just that we're still a full six months out from the first primary election, let alone the general.

Time and circumstances are cruel fates on the electoral landscape. Remember a guy named Dick Gephart?

  • Very true. But over a quarter million contributors is a pretty big deal. I can't translate the percentage, but that's a whole lot of unpaid volunteers if they can keep the momentum through the summer and fall.

I a big believer that it's the volunteers as much as the money. They talk to friends and neighbors, make calls, knock doors, get out vote.

I think the biggest question/challenge is the demographics of his support. How much of it os youth/outsider support and how much persuasion can they have.

I'm inpressed with the dollar total mainly because it represents so many people willing to "invest" in Obama.

You're definitely right, money isn't everything, but it doesn't hurt.
