Political bits

(AP) Libby will be going to prison while his appeals process goes forward. The decision was unanimous (3 of 3 judges,) and only merited a "one-paragraph order."

(AP) The McCain campaign is dying, firing 50 employees and forcing pay cuts on senior aides. Equally notable, $11 million raised this quarter and only $2 million cash on hand. That's less than a month at the previous burn rate.

(Politico) The McCain campaign has now decided to accept public matching funds, the only major campaign to do so.

(TPM) NYC firefighters stay after Giuliani. (They will give legs to all the 9-11 challenges against Giuliani. Like the Swiftboaters, they will keep bringing the charges back to the surface.)

Correction: Libby will not go to prison. His sentence was commuted by the President. So, Obstruction of Justice is now okay y'all. Go wild.

(Politico) McCain guts his Iowa staff including his state director.

And, Here's the GOP playbook/talking points (pdf) for its Congressional members headed home for the July 4 recess.

  • Bush commutes Libby's sentence. Won't see the inside of a jail. Told ya so.

  • And Fred Thompson and all the other Free Scooter Fund people will make sure Libby never has to pay a cent of that $250,000 fine. Plus he'll get lots of wingnut welfare to ease the pain of losing his law license - he'll join the American Enterprise Institute in some capacity, get a Wall Street Journal column and join FOX News as a "legal analyst."

Yeah, it pays to have friends in the right places. If you're going take one for the team, make sure it's a wingnut team. That makes the perjury and obstruction A-OK!

  • I used to think Lewis Carroll wrote some pretty weird stuff.... He's got nuthin' on modern American reality.

  • We've moved from one Orwellian scenario -- 1984 -- to another -- Animal Farm.

“All Pigs Are Equal, But Some Pigs Are More Equal Than Others.”

    This will not end well.

  • Reality, yeah, he'll find a soft landing writing foreign policy/strategic pieces at one of the less public think tanks. He'll get a regular posting on some rightsided news org.

EPM, it's more or less over. There'll be some cries here for a week or so, and it will be dragged back up here and there, but the media nowadays covers the controversy, and there really is no airable he said she said on this after the initial shock wears off.
