Abandoning Iraq's Constitution

I don't know if this is anything, but if it is, it could be big.
Under pressure from the Congress, Arab states and Sunni Iraqi leaders, the US administration on Tuesday set the stage for "major" political changes in Iraq.

The changes will be in "the structure, nature and direction of the Iraqi state," a senior American official in Baghdad was quoted by AP as saying.

He did not give out details, but the plan is expected to be high on the agenda of a 'crisis summit'....

Reading between the lines of other recent statements, I would guess they're talking about a non-elected "presidential council" of some sort consisting of members of the different factions.

Just something to keep an eye on.

  • Interesting. We'll have to wait for the details. It may be the price for getting cooperation in Anbar. Anbar is really getting played up as a big success.

  • Does this mean The Commander Guy is now trying to change course of the USS Cockup? One tiny unannounced act at a time. Maybe in an effort to declare "victory" in time for peak politicking season in '08? Or is this really BushCo simple sliding back under the sheer force of reality, despite it's best effort to beat the region in to an America-loving Kumbya sing-a-long party.

    Hmmm.

(PS. sorry for the anti-war, hollier-than-though snarkiness.)

  • Anon, I don't know. The idea of this new pseudo government is to get the factions represented, but I'm not sure how it would resolve the Shia/Kurd versus Sunni problem.

The bottom line problems would still be there.

Of course, a selected government could choose to cut out the factions considered problematic like Sadr and elements of the Sunnis.

How does this relate to Parliament? Is it just a mechanism to replace Maliki without the uncertainty?

    ....

EPM, Yes. If what I'm talking about comes to pass, it would be an abandonment of democracy and the installation of ruling group with no official reason for them being there except US choice.

Have to wait and see what this mean, but I think its the US way of getting rid of Maliki without the problems of actually having elections for a new leader.

  • Maybe we're going to try to resurrect Saddam. ;-)

  • Who knows. I think if they could take him back without admitting the mistake they would.
