Bhutto turns against Musharraf

Benazir Bhutto switches sides saying that she could never powershare with Musharraf and will now work with exiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who has the support and contacts in the military to represent a direct overthrow threat.

Also, the US plans to send a "special envoy," as yet unnamed, to tell Musharraf to lift the "state of emergency" before the elections.

  • Bhutto, Musharraf, Sharif... all after the same hunger for power and control? What about the people of Pakistan? Are there any politicians actually interested in democracy, as opposed to negotiating power amongst themselves?

I know very little, so have more questions than understanding.

Re: Special envoy.... is Rice back to her (self-imposed?) sequestration with regard to, oh, I don't know, doing her job as Secretary of State?

And does any one really think Bush cares about Musharraf's actions regarding emergency rule and suspension of the constitution? Oh, please. I'm sure George is more envious than outraged... notwithstanding the awkward public position this has put Bush in, where by he is forced to give perfunctory admonition to his Pakistani strongman.

  • Pakistan has long been a balance between the power of the people in the streets vs. the military. No matter from which side they come from, they're all after graft and patronage. That's the Pakistani way.

And, don't get me started on Condi Rice. Did you see they can't even agree to an opening statement in the coming middle east peace "negotiations?"

  • 80% of gas/petrol shipments to our troops in Afghani come through Paki. We are between a rock and a bigger rock. Musharraf prbably is saying any excess pressure on him just takes his attention away from making sure the gas flows...

  • I think you hit on the key point in all this. What's being said behind closed doors.

One of my great hopes is that I live the 40 years so that I can see the Bush administration declassification.
