Picture of the Day

(Army Spc. Rick Yarosh, Bingham NY, who was wounded in Iraq in Sept. 2006, waits to be greeted by President Bush as he visits a physical therapy lab for wounded soldiers at the Center For The Intrepid at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007. (This was just a stop on a larger trip. (AP) "Bush attended a brunch Thursday at the manicured mansion of Richard Kinder, chairman of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners. He was attending a second fundraiser for Sen. John Cornyn later in San Antonio, hosted by lawyer John Steen. The aim was to raise $1.3 million to get out the GOP vote in Texas.")

How much money did he help raise for Army Spc. Rick Yarosh?

  • It would be interesting to notice if Mr. Bush was able to look Army Specialist Rick Yarosh in the eyes during his visit to Brooke Army Medical Center. Knowing, as Mr. Bush surely knows in his own mind, that the justification for invading Iraq was a fabrication of lies supported by statements obtained through torture, his ability to face Specialist Yarosh could only have been possible for one of two equally discomforting reasons. Mr. Bush is either tragically ignorant of his responsibility as Commander-in-Chief for initiating such a strategic blunder, or he is so callous as to view solders like Specialist Yarosh as collateral damage in the neocon’s holy war against the Islamist hoard threatening Christian America’s dominance in the region. There’s sufficient evidence to show that Mr. Bush never completed his military obligations with the Texas Air National Guard and that he used his father’s political connections to avoid the consequences. His presence at Brooke Army Medical Center is an insult to the brave men and women that have sacrificed their rich potential for his malfeasance or worse, his role in the criminal conspiracy that got us into Iraq.

  • Poor guy. Bush seems to like this kind of photo op. Shows how well the troops are holding up I guess.

  • Bobby, there's not a wire photo of Bush looking at Spec Yarosh, but I would guess he did. There's several other pictures of Bush with another burn victim.

As to the second bit, we've got wounded who are suffering, vets who are homeless, marriages wrecked, and yet politicians from both parties continue these lavish fundraisers without even putting a hat out for the military charities.

I mean really, you're hosting a luncheon for people writing multiple $2300 checks to their congressman, senator, and unlimited checks for the GOP.

    ....

Anon, I think it's a key part of the White House's PR. They have to show that he "gets it" in order to maintain the image of resolution.

Some people have to be soldiers, some people have to be commander-in-chief...its just the way it is.

  • Why don't you ask Rick how he felt about the meeting? If you knew him, I doubt he would be as petty as you.

I had the honor of chance meeting Rick at a Binghamton automotive facility and was humbled by his gentle manner and candor.

After a brief exchange regarding our respective MOS status, among other dialogue he shared a story with me regarding his concern with being accepted upon his return home.

He said he was at a restaurant where a child was staring at him. The child's father encouraged her to talk to Rick.

Upon her approach Rick cheerfully greeted her and she ran back to her father excited that they spoke.

I understood his cheerful acount to be a relief that society would accept him.

What I took away from our twenty minute encounter was that while Rick is courageously living with his injuries, he is selflessly beset by others whose sacrifice was greater.

May we honor those who surrender themselves so we may live freely with respect for each other.
