Picture of the Day

Over the last week, here's what I've learned: This Clinton administration will not be like that Clinton administration.

(Hillary Rodham Clinton finishes her door-to-door campaigning in Manchester, N.H., Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007. (AP Photo/Jim Cole))

(PS. This is the worst Clinton photo I've seen. Is the campaign slipping? Are the photographers feeling freer? Is there something conscious or subconscious in the coverage?)

And, if this offends a reader, I'm sorry, but they crossed a line Friday night, and I'm pissed.

  • The campaign can't control what photos are taken in public, and photographers can't control what photos are published. We are seeing the photos we see because a publisher/editor wants us to.

  • ... And for what it's worth, having a editor on staff can always help the campaign.

    "Fixed" photo.

Though such photo work would be unethical in news publications... or at least it used to be.

  • The candidate, however, can control their exposure. While I hesitate to speak for Mike, I see this as a common theme in his commentary.

I am also 'pissed' about her recent remarks. It's not only a low blow, but it's the kind of nebulous fear-mongering that goes against the effort to present a contrast between Republicans and Democrats. Many will argue that there isn't a lot of difference between them, but you don't win elections by making yourself appear identical to your opposition. If these remarks were from someone in the campaign, it would be easier to overlook or brush aside, but they came from her mouth.

I think there is good solid reasoning behind Bill Clinton's advisors going to the Obama camp. While I am not sure whose pocket Hillary is in, she seems to me to be more of a creation of focus groups and Party committees than a candidate capable of cleaning up after the Decider.

I also don't buy into the line that Hillary is more "electable". The Republicans are so far out of the mainstream, IMHO, that the Democrats could run Socks the White House Cat and win.

  • ...oops. I just realised I wrote that Hillary made the attack on Obama, when it was in fact Bill. I'm not sure why that association is so firm in my mind, but I do actually know that Bill was the one to make the remarks, even if my words say otherwise.

  • I believe the Clinton campaign has blamed Bill's comments as the actions of an over zealous volunteer and not officially sanctioned nor approved by the campaign. You know those nutty kids! They just get all worked up and protective of their candidate...

  • EPM, I was just curious because we haven't seen anything close to this photo in the wire bins. Definitely a choice by someone, but significant because we haven't seen it before.

(And that's a funny closing joke.)

    .....

Todd, Frankly, if Bill Clinton said something that inflammatory, clearly Hillary Clinton knew about it. Maybe the exact words are his, but it falls into the campaign's message over the last negative week "is he experienced/is he ready."

And, if there is any defense for the Clinton statements, I would offer this. She may be about to lose this whole thing.

She has no overriding message or theme that she can resurrect to win this thing.

I hate it, it's made me viscerally dislike her, but it's what she has left.

  • She came into the race with a lot going for her. She may be smart but basically she just isn't very likable.

  • Yeah. I figure that her Clinton administration will find just as much conflict with the Republicans as the last one except that she won't have the charisma to smooth it over.

  • I was offended when Obama said there's a social security crisis after we beat back the last attack on SS, I was offended when Obama attacked Paul Krugman the most progressive voice at the Times, and I was offended when Obama told non-religious people that they need to listen to homophobes and understand why it's okay to hate homosexuals.

  • All true, and all justified.

I'm just pissed today because they went to the "vote for x and you'll die."
