It's not only an incredibly callous statement by McConnell, it's untrue, given that there are so many national guard troops there.
Makes you wonder about how guys like this get elected - and about the people who elect them.

This seems like a profoundly stupid remark on McConnell's part. I don't know the numbers of troops being kept in Iraq against their will on stop-loss, but it's got to be a lot. Sure, they volunteered, but I don't think that National Guard troops joined up in expectation of going to Iraq. Saying that they should have read the fine print is a pretty weak endorsement.
Regardless of how he spins it, it's going to sound like a pretty desperate defence. It seems unlikely to help recruitment efforts as well. It doesn't take a genius to read between the lines and see the words, "If you think this sucks, you shouldn't have volunteered".
