Actually it's an interesting question as to whether the Republicans under McCain will be as vicious and horrible as under Bush. If you assume for the sake of argument that they might not be, there is a valid concern about legitimate criticism being perceived as racist/sexist.
(Mike, remember when you asked if Obama wasn't starting to seem a little cocky, and someone thought you were portraying him as an uppity n*****? That sort of thing.)
But if the Republicans want to know how to pull it off, they should look at the Obama campaign. While Obama has been (I think) more negative than most people will admit, none of his criticisms of Clinton that I've heard have been ones that could be misconstrued as sexist. Excellent message discipline there.
