Bush takes his party down with him

It's Politico, but I trust Jim Vandehei.

Republicans across the country are warning that increasing public discontent toward President Bush, the Iraq war and the GOP brand in general threatens to send the party's 2008 campaign planning into a tailspin.

Already, the problems are having tangible effects. Some of the party's top recruits in key races from Colorado to Florida are refusing to run for Congress. Business executives -- the financial backbone of the GOP -- are sending more and more money to Democrats. Overall Republican fundraising is down sharply from the same time frame during the past two presidential elections.

If you're intrigued, there's alot more in this article.

  • That was an excellent article.

    Good find, thanks.

  • Check this if you haven't seen it:

This noxious regime has created an entire generation of Democrats. While that's all fine and well I'd gladly trade it all in for the lives of our soldiers.

Add to it the ragtag group of Republicans in the 2008 race and the (fairly) stellar bunch of Dems and you get America standing before a sharp left turn in the road.

  • Yeah. I though this had alot in it.

Nonplussed, I started off with an "also" update linking to an analysis piece written about this study, but the post looked too long.

I didn't include the self identification clip from the article, 50% now self identifying as Dems, or, a report I saw elsewhere about the age breakdowns.

    Thanks for the pointer.

  • " Bush takes his party down with him"

So I was wrong. Bush is good for something.

  • Yeah, but that's like being thankful the captain of the Titanic took the crew out.

  • I think of it more like chemotherapy: even though he's making the country sick, he's killing the virus of totalitarian Republicanism that, if unchecked, could be far more damaging.

I'm trying to find the silver lining here...

  • Perhaps my analogy comes from the fact that I'm a pessimist.

(I really do like your unintentional broader comment that Bush is radioactive.)
