Bush in the mideast

I thought these two opening paragraphs summed it up pretty well,

(Reuters) "President George W. Bush sought to reassure skeptical Arabs on Sunday he is committed to securing a deal on Palestinian statehood before he leaves office, despite his outspoken support for Israel."

(AP) "Israel got glowing praise from President Bush earlier this week. On Sunday, the Arab world got a stern lecture...."

  • I found the juxtaposition of these two headlines form CNN Online to be indicative of how completely disconnected from reality (or is it just blind White-Christian supremacy?) this administration really is.

"Bush to Mideast: Grant more freedoms"
"U.S. general apologizes for Quran target practice"

  • Yeah. That pretty much sums up where we are.

A little different because the q'uran target practice was low level, but still....

  • Just guessing but I bet his buddies thought it was hilarious.

  • Probably. Soldiers are not frequently known for the subtlety of their humor.

  • I don't fully buy the "low level" argument as being in some way exculpatory for Bush. Yes it was a low level grunt doing the "target shooting" but there's been a pattern of this behaviour (Abu Graib, etc). As far as I'm concerned there is a Bush, Rumsfeld, Gonzales -- and even by extension the rubber stamp Republicans -- have poisoned the well. With a wink and a nod, and reckless rhetoric, they've turned "American values" on its head.

  • Yeah, I know where you're coming from, but I would guess that there is a standing directive about this sort of thing for the Army grunts under cultural sensitivity or somesuch.

Now, if you go back to the Q'uran mistreatment at Guantanamo, I would put that more in the category you're talking about, because there was alot of gray area in policy.
