  • There was a description of how this came about. A bunch of reporteres asked the campaign if they would have time off to visit. They were told yes. And then Clinton added it to her list.

    They didn't have the gall to actually schedule a speech there. This was just a "tourist visit" with photographers allowed just one brief photo opportunity. This one.

    Does anyone believe that a few days before Puerto Rico, a few days before the Rules and Bylaws Committee, less than a week before the lst primaries, Hillary Clinton took time off for "tourism?"

  • True. And to some degree a well developed sense of self confidence is necessary for the job.

    But we've seen what an uncheck, over-developed ego can do to a country (indeed, the world) in just 8 short years. Policies aside, isn't there more than a passing similarity between the Clintons and Bush in their ability to live outside a reality based world? To construct their own reality largely out of whole cloth and unblinkingly sell it to the American public as truth?

  • Okay.

    But, you also gotta admit that Obama has yet to be really put in a position where his best laid plans have turned to crap, so we don't really know what his response would be either.

    My gut says he doesn't divorce from reality, but, we really don't know.

  • Perhaps. But Obama wasn't always had the lead. Yet, he's always been gracious and inspiring in defeat. He's shown an ability to remain grounded in reality and pragmatism even as events were turning against him (Tony Rezco, the never-ending Rev. Wright flap, the inflammatory comments by Bill, the tabloid Stephonopolis/Gibson "debate"... )

    My gut tells me he'd work to change an unfavorable reality through dogged determination, not fabricate one out of smoke and mirrors and try to pass it off as truth. Indeed, I think that's how he's gotten to where he is today. Likewise, I think Hillary's words and actions are what's gotten her to where she is today.

  • I tend to agree with you that the Obama reaction would be different, I'm just making a point.

    The sense of inevitability that the Obama supporters are feeling now is akin to that the Clinton folks felt last year. Imagine watching that unravel, more or less beyond your comprehension, over four months. Loss after loss, not understanding it all....

    My guess is that there is some psychological alchemy in all this. It's hard to tell. Some boxers when they're wobbly throw what they think is their best punch, over and over. Others mix up a whole bunch of moves they're not good at hoping for a surprise. Others stay on the game plan no matter what even when it's not working.

    It's hard to tell.
