Picture of the Day - Kremlinology

So, Barack Obama holds a very high profile appearance in North Carolina, and, although they were there and credited, neither John or Elizabeth Edwards gets on the stage or gets pictured with the candidate?

Interesting.

  • Kremlinology, indeed.

I see this as a growing alliance between the Edwards' and Obama. Obama's all about pacing... like a marathon runner. This is really the spot you'd expect to see Hillary and Bill... the reigning monarchs of Democratic Party politics and the very close runners up to party nomination. Yet we see the Edwards', who have been practically flying under the radar for months.

Obama can't make too big a show of his alliance with Edwards as that would further alienate Hillary's supporters, who are still nursing their wounds from the blistering campaign. But, look to see the Edwards' populist message and healthcare ideas to work their way into Obama's campaign. Also, look to see less and less of the Clinton's... at least with regard to an association with the Obama campaign.

This could really be another step in shifting the Democratic party into a new, post-Clinton, generation. (Dean still chair, no lobbyist money to DNC, the Edwards' taking a greater role).

    Further note:
This bringing in of the Edwards', if true, is a further example of a generational shift in the Democratic Party. We are now, for the first time, moving to a post-Vietnam leadership.... (Edwards and Obama are both too young to have be drafted)

Meanwhile, the GOP seems to still be fighting WWII... They still think the world is as it was in 1939.

  • My understanding is that Obama gave a shout out to Elizabeth as she is supposed to help out on health care policy issues.

If anyone knew the Edwards very well, they would know that they didn't care about sharing the spotlight with him. It was always about the issues with them, not their personal personas. Obama...well...

  • EPM, I think part of it is that after all the Clinton stuff, he's trying to unquestionably be the highest stature on the stage to give him a more "commanding" feel.

I'm really waiting to see how Hillary Clinton campaigns for him. If they're together or if she fills the role Bill Clinton played for her, small halls below the radar but doing serious legwork in Pa, Oh, Fla.

As for generational, I think that's one of the reasons the GOP pushed and the media bit on Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright. It's not just Vietnam he's past, it's that whole villainized era.

    ....

Benny, Yeah, that came out yesterday that Elizabeth is signing onto a role in the healthcare design, push.

As for John Edwards, yeah, I'm willing to accept that as a broad statement although I don't think you can say he is without ego. But yeah, generally speaking, he was about issues. He just never found the right language.
